The first night of “The Inspector General” play took place on the
Alexandrinsky Stage on April 19 (May 4) 1836; N.V. Gogol himself took
part in its production. Since then, ten performances after the immortal
Gogol’s composition had been produced at the Alexandrinsky Theater.
Such actors as N.O. Dyur and A.M. Maximov, A.A. Nilsky and N.F.
Sazonov, V.P. Dalmatov and B.A. Gorin-Goryainov, B.A. Babochkin and G.I.
Soloviev, and B.A. Freinlikh had played the role of Khlestakov; I.I.
Sosnitsky, V.N. Davydov, I.M. Uralov, Y.V. Tolubeyev had performed the
Mayor, and such great actresses as V.N. Asenkova and M.G. Savina had
played the role of Maria Antonovna.
OUtstanding directors: Y.P. Karpov, B.M. Sushkevich, N.V. Petrov, and
L.S. Vivien had worked on the productions of “The Inspector General.”
Presently, the tenth version of “The Inspector General” is presented on
the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater in Valery Fokin’s production; the
performance was honored with the National Theater Prize “The Golden
Mask” and the RF State Award.
